A Legacy of Breaking Barriers & Empowering Dreams: Entrepreneur Works Celebrates 35 Years

On a memorable October evening, the Entrepreneur Works family gathered for a celebration that was as much about the dreams of the future as it was about honoring the past. The 35th Anniversary was more than an event—it was a testament to resilience, ambition, and the power of community. Together, we celebrated the thousands of entrepreneurs who have walked through our doors and dared to dream, despite the barriers they faced. It was a night to reflect on the lives transformed by Entrepreneur Works and to renew our mission to lift the next generation of visionaries.

Stories of Legacy and Vision

The energy in the room was palpable from the start, as Jim Turner, Host Committee Chair, welcomed guests with a reminder of what Entrepreneur Works has achieved—more than 530 loans to local businesses, over $3 million invested, and countless lives changed through business training, mentorship, and unwavering support. With each story shared that evening, our collective mission came into sharper focus.

Honoring the Frederick Heldring Visionary Achiever Award

One of the night’s most poignant moments was the presentation of the Frederick Heldring Visionary Achiever Award to Judy Wicks. Judy’s advocacy for local economies has uplifted communities across Philadelphia and beyond. As she took the stage, introduced by Mary Carroll Donahoe, daughter of our late founder Frederick Heldring, there was a profound sense of continuity—a passing of the torch from our founder’s vision to those who carry it forward. Mary Carroll spoke of her father’s belief that economic self-determination was a right, not a privilege. Judy’s acceptance speech was a rallying cry for all of us to keep fighting for that right, to ensure that the dream of prosperity remains within reach for all.

Hall of Fame Inductees: A Testament to Transformation

As Earl Boyd, Director of Entrepreneur Services, introduced the newest members of the Entrepreneur Works Hall of Fame, the room filled with pride. Jeremy Fyfe, founder of GLS Painters, shared his personal journey of building a business for his family. “The Fyfe family is now in Entrepreneur Works Hall of Fame,” he shared, his words carrying the weight of hope and responsibility. His journey from dreamer to business owner to legacy-builder embodied our mission—showing that when one person is empowered, entire families and communities benefit.

Wakila Saleem, founder of Attentive Care Services Agency, spoke about the support that helped her build a business now responsible for creating over 100 jobs in her community. “They were paramount in my journey to starting my business,” she shared, reflecting on the guidance and resources provided by Entrepreneur Works. Her induction was a celebration of resilience, vision, and a ripple effect of impact that has changed lives far beyond her own.

Recognizing Champions of Small Business

This celebration was also an opportunity to honor the champions who have supported and advocated for small business growth. State Senator Vincent Hughes received the Community Champion Award, recognized for his work to expand opportunity and resources for underserved communities. His words of encouragement resonated, underscoring the need to champion those who are too often overlooked.

William Smith, honored with the Legacy Champion Award, was introduced by Sharmain Matlock-Turner, the CEO of the Urban Affairs Coalition, his longtime colleague. Together, they have worked to drive sustainable growth in underserved areas, proving that collaboration is the foundation of lasting impact. Bill’s decades of service and commitment to community development served as an inspiring reminder of what sustained effort can achieve.

Wells Fargo Commitment to Empowerment

A special part of the evening was the presentation of the Empowerment Catalyst Award to Wells Fargo, accepted by Stephen Briggs. Wells Fargo’s support has been instrumental in helping us build pathways for small business owners. Stephen’s acceptance reminded us that impactful change requires both resources and dedication from partners who share our values. Through Wells Fargo’s generosity, more entrepreneurs can access the tools they need to succeed, paving the way for lasting economic empowerment.

Empowering Dreams: A Visual Tribute by Tatiana Bacchus

A highlight of the night was a moving video titled “Empowering Dreams,” created by Tatiana Bacchus of Teaspoon and Pound Media. Tatiana’s journey with Entrepreneur Works is extraordinary: a former employee turned client, she grew her own small business production company and now empowers others through her work. Her video told the stories of entrepreneurs whose lives have been changed by Entrepreneur Works, bringing the audience face-to-face with the resilience and determination of those we serve. The video will live on our “Donate” page as a reminder of the lives touched and the dreams waiting to be realized. Watch the full video and see the impact of your support.

Looking to the Future

The evening closed with a sense of purpose. Leslie Benoliel, President and CEO of Entrepreneur Works, reminded us that this is only the beginning. The support of our community, the dedication of our partners, and the courage of our clients are what drive us forward. We have come so far, but there is still much to be done. With every loan, every training session, and every word of encouragement, we break down barriers and create pathways to prosperity.

To everyone who has been a part of this journey—our clients, supporters, and sponsors like Wells Fargo—we thank you. Together, we are creating a future where every entrepreneur, regardless of their background, has the chance to succeed. This celebration wasn’t just about looking back; it was a promise to keep moving forward, empowering dreams and building a legacy of resilience.
