Portfolio Analyst Internship, Microlending Department (Summer 2017)

Position Summary

As our Portfolio Analyst Intern, you will play a key role in helping to scale up our Microlending Department by employing data analysis, qualitative research, and operational strategy to help us understand, streamline and expand our lending portfolio.

The position will be flexible and project based; we are looking to help you explore the full range of your talents. We expect the direction of the work to reflect the strengths of the applicant, areas where the applicant is looking to build new experience, and the needs of the department.

Potential projects include:

  • Analyzing our current portfolio and performance to build a dashboard, identify trends and quantify our impact. We’d like to have a better understanding of what factors (socioeconomic, loan structure, collateral, etc.) impact our lending outcomes.
  • Performing market research and evaluating new financial products to identify ways to improve our services and reach more clients.
  • Streamlining our current financial/operational systems. Use your keen eye for operations to improve our workflow and optimize our processes, including our SQL based loan servicing system.

We are looking for an intern to work approximately 15-20 hours per week. Exact start and end dates are negotiable.

Compensation & Other Benefits

The intern will finish the summer with a portfolio of 3-4 data analysis, market research, and/or operational optimization projects that will provide a firm basis for future work in finance, ops or analytics.

This is an unpaid internship opportunity. Students looking for course credit or with outside funding are especially encouraged to apply!

Skills and Attributes

Anyone who is passionate about building economic justice for underserved populations and can demonstrate the required attributes listed below is encouraged to apply.

The following are required:

  • Basic excel skills (intermediate or advanced excel skills preferred)
  • Experience with at least one of the following skill areas:
    • Science/social science research
    • data analysis
    • computer programming (esp. relational database)
    • financial analysis
    • market research
    • operations/systems design or research

The following are preferred:

  • SQL skills
  • Research management experience
  • Understanding of microlending industry
  • Experience working with a non-profit, community, or social justice organization
  • Current undergraduate or graduate student pursuing coursework relevant to the position

Social Impact Marketing Internship, Microlending Department (Summer 2017)

Position Summary

As our Social Impact Marketing Intern, you will play a key role in helping to scale up our Microlending Department by telling the stories of our incredible clients to the world.

You will be responsible for building and publishing a portfolio of creative marketing materials via a variety of channels (our website, social media and print media) to promote our impact and micro-lending services.

The position will be flexible; we are looking to help you explore the full range of your talents. We expect the direction of the work to reflect the strengths of the applicant, areas where the applicant is looking to build new experience, and the needs of the department.

Potential Projects Include:  

  • Creating a portfolio of interviews and narrative stories about our most successful clients, and then publishing your work via social and print media.
  • Designing and testing online ads to build an effective marketing campaign.
  • Employing human-oriented design to create effective, engaging paper marketing materials that clearly explain our lending products to potential clients.
  • Building out educational curricula (likely videos) on our website to help make the lending process less intimidating and more accessible for potential clients.

We are looking for an intern to work approximately 15-20 hours per week. Exact start and end dates are negotiable.

Compensation & Other Benefits

The intern will walk away from the position with a portfolio of marketing materials to show future employers, as well as the experience of implementing the marketing strategy that they design.

This is an unpaid internship opportunity. Students looking for course credit or with outside funding are especially encouraged to apply!

Those who are passionate about building economic justice for underserved populations and have experience with two or more of the following skill areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Marketing
  • Social Media (could be content and/or ad production related)
  • Interviewing, storytelling or journalism
  • Non-profits, social justice, or community development
  • Print media design (e.g. informational pamphlets, paper marketing materials, etc.)
  • Digital video production
  • Educational curriculum development
